As we reported in March, the mosaic tile mural that adorns the 100+ foot section of wall on Fell street at Pierce street was vandalized by taggers. In response to the tagging, we reached out to Supervisor Preston's office for assistance in organizing a volunteer crew and DPW ambassador to help us repair the damage done to the mural.
The supervisor's office put us in contact with a representative from DPW but to our disappointment, the DPW response was that they will not touch anything attached to SFUSD property.
We then began seeking the assistance of a mosaic tile expert to aide us in the removal of the graffitti. Fast forward to May 2021 and sadly, the entire length of the massive retaining wall is now covered in spray paint.
We reached out to the Principal of Ida B. Wells to request that something be done to remove the tagging from the art wall. Thankfully, the Principal of IBW has dispatched the SFUSD facilities maintenance team to come up with a plan to remove the spray paint from the wall.
We will continue to follow this story and report back on the progress in restoring this beautiful piece of public art when we know more.
